Safe Holiday Driving

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel days of the year. With early winter arriving with snow and frigid temperatures, now is a great time to think about winter driving safety and maintenance tips.

  • Give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination
  • Carry a cellphone in case of emergency or running late
  • Leave distance between you and the car in front of you
  • Be careful on bridges as they tend to freeze before the roadways
  • Be sure your gas tank is full
  • Avoid sudden stops
  • Keep windshield and windows clear
  • Do not activate cruise control when driving on slippery surfaces
  • Keep your tires properly inflated
  • Check exhaust pipe to make sure that it is clear.

September is Life Insurance Awareness Month

We tend not to want to think about what would happen to our families and businesses if something were to happen to us.  September is Life Insurance Awareness Month and now is a good time to think about how life insurance can benefit you.  Today according to LIMRA (Life Insurance and Market Research Association) 95 million adult Americans have no life insurance whatsoever.

Don’t be among that number.  Call us today to find out how easily and inexpensively life insurance can be added to your financial and insurance portfolios.

Government Publishes Guidelines for Cyber Security Framework

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has released its voluntary industry standards and best practices to prevent cyber attacks.  The publication – “Framework for Improving Critical Infrastructure Cybersecurity” consists of three divisions:  core, tiers, and profiles.

The core provides a set of activities that a company can perform to insure cyber security.  The tiers provides context on how companies view cyber security risk and the processes in place to manage risk.  Profiles align functions, tiers, risk tolerance, and resources of a company.

The Framework was created through collaboration between the government and the private sector.  The Framework can be used to complement an organization’s risk management and cyber security program.

Pre-FIRM Policyholders Should Be Aware of the Importance of on time Flood Insurance Renewal Payments

If you are a Pre-FIRM policyholder who pays your flood insurance renewal outside of your grace period, this will create a lapse in coverage and therefore be subject to: immediate loss of subsidy; incur an expense for obtaining an elevation certificate; be subject to inflated rates pending elevation certificate analysis; reduce coverages that may no longer satisfy your lender; and finally increase rates as a result of the elevation certificate, according to Selective Insurance.

Best advise: pay your flood premiums on time to avoid a lapse.

Guarding Against Ice Dams

Winter storms have brought with them melting and freezing ice and snow which cause ice dams.  To assist you in preventing damage to your home or business, we encourage you to:

  • Clear the first three to four feet of snow closest to the gutters of overhangs of your roof after a storm to  prevent the ice dam.  In addition, accumulated snow, ice, and melt-off may create additional weight and stress on your roof, particularly flat roofs or roofs with changes in elevation that allow driving.
  • Clear your downspouts so melting snow will flow easily.
  • Look carefully at large icicles. If the icicles are confined to the gutters and there is no water trapped behind them, this does not indicate the presence of an ice dam. However, large icicles can pose a danger to people when they fall off. Try to safely knock the icicles off from the ground, making sure not to stand directly beneath them. If you cannot reach them safely from the ground, consider hiring a contractor to help.

2013 Toys for Tots Campaign Exceeds Expectations!

James A. Connors Associates participated in this year's Toys for Tots Campaign and had its best year ever with 1,097 toys. This is 386 more than last year. The campaign which originally started in 2006 in the Califon office collected 263 toys. Their numbers increase each year due to the generosity of friends, family, employees, and the surrounding communities. All years combined, the agency has collected over 4,600 toys. The main objective of the campaign is to help the less fortunate children that would not have a holiday otherwise.

The Marine’s objective is to help less fortunate children throughout the United States experience the joy of Christmas; to play an active role in the development of one of our nation’s most valuable resources – our children; to unite all members of local communities in a common cause for three months each year during the annual toy collection and distribution campaign; and to contribute to better communities in the future.

We acknowledge all our employees from our Morristown, Califon, and Edison offices. Happy Holidays!
